I do most admire that last sentence -- the printing press as a technological metaphor for pilgrimage. The movement from the oral narrative society, to the beautiful but singular and scarce books -- to the sudden abundance of ideas and images in books which enabled more souls to become acquainted with more ideas and enrich their faith life. Pretty cool. As for relics -- my favorite remains the head of St Catherine of Siena which I visited. She was serene and calm in her wimple. Rather moving really to know these saints were real human beings-- not just fanciful tales. My teenage son, indifferent to the church became far more respectful in the presence of such august relics, realizing the sacrifices of the Saints.
